Reportedly a large number of Gmail accounts of high-profile people like US government representatives, Chinese radicals and journalists have been tried to be hacked by cyber criminals, hailing from China. However, this vicious act was detected by Google, well in time and it foiled the malevolent effort. This malicious cyber attack has further aggravated the already strained relations between China and Google. Google in its blog mentioned about a common malicious practice of retrieving user’s passwords to get information stored in Gmail accounts of the users via phishing.
This “affected what seem to be the personal Gmail accounts of hundreds of users, including among others, senior US government officials, Chinese political activists, officials in several Asian countries (predominantly South Korea), military personnel and journalists”. Nevertheless Google has not put the entire blame on the Chinese Government behind the cyber intrusion. However, Bruce Schneier, chief security technical officer at Telecommunications Company BT has hinted upon the widespread cyber intrusions in China over a period of time. He further pens his fears by saying various professional Chinese are involved in these cyber attacks and they do it with their Government’s consent.
Google’s retreat from Chinese web market has further flamed the relationship between China and US. Moreover, United States taking a step further has warned that another cyber intrusion may mean a military reprisal. Reportedly the intelligent agencies of the United States are working in compliance with Google to ensure taking steps to foil any such attempt in future and track down the cyber criminals.
Jinan, where the cyber criminals are reportedly hailing from is home to one of the six technical reconnaissance bureaus, which a report said are involved in exploiting sensitive foreign networks. Previous year, US intelligence agency officials have hinted upon a link between various major cyber attacks and Lanxiang Vocational school situated in Jinan. A lot of people now have raised their concerns regarding Gmail’s security and have now started relying less on Gmail owing to the security issue. However, Google emphasized that regardless of these malicious cyber attacks, their internal systems are running fine and that the hacking is not being done owing to some internal flaw in Gmail.
