CPCI for Industrial Computers

CompactPCI or CPCI is a high performance computer bus which is built for industrial computer system to fit and support the ruggedized environment and ensure longevity. CPCI is a technology based on PCI electrical specification and it leverages the standard of PCI bus in most of the features such as processor core and architecture.

Compared to desktop PCI specification, CPCI was designed in many features for industrial computers. For example, desktop PCI only support maximum four slot while CPCI can have eight slots and can also expands to support extra seven more slot with bridge chips.

Even though the performance is remarkable, CPCI offers low cost economical value and benefit for the industries by using inexpensive silicon produced in very high volume. Typically, you can see that CPCI were priced below market price for equivalent product such as VME.

When talking about VME and how the advantages of CPCI have more than VME is an interesting topic for discussion. CPCI uses and leverage the same technology as desktop PCI. Thus, we can say that all current computers do have the similar or some sort of PCI bus which means that CPCI is more popular in mainstream desktops and server market. Plus, CPCI also support intelligent Input Output and offers flexible configuration of system peripherals on local bus.

CPCI is targeted to fulfill interconnection computer bus demand from industries that require high speed and robust computing system for critical computer application such as in telephony, medical, telecommunication, military and many others.
