Photography is one of the most expressive forms of visual art because it helps to express ideas better than words can. What a photographer can do with just one picture a writer may not be able to achieve in a thousand words.

It’s good that you have decided to venture into a career in photography but before you take any serious steps it’s important that you consider which particular photography career will suit you. Here are five career options you can choose from.

Commercial Photography

All types of photography are commercial but this is actually a career where you take pictures solely for the purpose of selling to advertisers, news media and magazines. You can take photographs of interior décor, latest automobiles, new technological devices, gadgets and fashion.

Pictures like these are highly essential because promoters are always in need of images to boost sales and upgrade their publicity platforms. One good thing about this type of career is that you’re not limited to any particular genre. You can take any types of photo based on your perceptions and sell it to people who will use them.

Photojournalism

News happens every second in your local community and around the world. Your job as a photojournalist is to take pictures that are newsworthy, for the purpose of selling them to online and offline news media. Most times when news breaks only the details are available and that is presented in the form of words.

But media outlets understand that providing a relevant photograph along with the text will not only give people a better mental understanding of what is going on but will also draw more attention to the article and the magazine/website/newspaper as a whole.

Wildlife Photography

Animals are a huge draw for people but most of us don’t have to them because they’re usually in the wild. This is the notion behind the creation of print media dedicated to showcasing wildlife in pictures. If you love the outdoors and wildlife then this is the right photography career for you.

You’ll have direct access to animals in their natural habitat and you’ll get to take exciting photographs from your own unique angle and perception. You’ll also have the opportunity to travel around the world and have free access to wildlife environments that most of us can only dream of.

Travel Photography

In modern times people always want to have good information about a place before they travel there. As a travel photographer your job is to travel to places, local and international, and capture events in pictures. There are hundreds of travel magazines both offline and online that are looking for authentic photographs from different destination in around the world.

One good thing about this career is that only a few people are involved in it. This means there is a huge opportunity for those who want to start their photography career in an environment that is not excessively saturated.

Fashion

Do you have an interest in the fast moving, glamorous, creative and lucrative fashion world? Here is an opportunity for you to get into the industry as a fashion photographer. You’ll attend fashion exhibitions, shows, parties and runways and take pictures that you can sell to hundreds of fashion magazines all over the world.

This career will give you the opportunity to mix with the high and mighty in the fashion and entertainment industry and that can really help you reach the top of your career in a very short while. Just make sure that you mix well with people, make good connections and follow up on your connections.

These days, anyone can pick up a digital SLR and look like a professional photographer. However, there’s more to taking photos than simply pointing and shooting. Good images are the result of clever composition, utilisation of settings, and understanding how a camera works. Here are three essential tips that every photographer should know.

1. Compose in thirds

This is a classic composition tip; if you use the thirds principle you can’t go wrong. According to ExposureGuide.com, a picture composed in thirds is more aesthetically pleasing, as it allows the viewer’s eyes to wander the frame of the image. To take a photograph in thirds, all you need to do is imagine four lines, with two lying horizontally across the image, and two vertically.

This will create nine even imaginary ‘squares’, which you can use to divide your image up into thirds. You can then play around with the focal point: some images will look great with a central focus, while others will look amazing when they’re off centre.

2. Know ISO

According to ThomasHawk.com, the easiest way to shoot at night (or in poorly lit conditions) is to use your ISO. Many photographers aren’t familiar with this setting, but they can dramatically improve the quality of their night shots by bumping up the ISO. Most digital cameras have an ISO setting of up to 1600.

However, the higher the ISO, the more stable your camera has to be: the slightest hand movement will result in a blurry image. The solution? Invest in a good tripod, or, alternatively, rest your camera against a chair, table, ledge, or even street pole.

3. No busy backgrounds

When taking a shot of a subject, be aware that a busy background could detract the viewer’s attention. Always try to choose a plain, simple and neutral background, as this will keep focus on the most important image: the subject. The eye always needs to be drawn straight to the subject; any diversions (for example, a patch of colour) will result in a poorly composed, weak image.

Summary

If you’d like to learn more, you can always do a short online photography course, which will allow you to get comfortable with the fundamentals. If you’d like to get your images out there, there are social media sites like Flickr and Tumblr, which are specifically geared towards photo sharing.

If you’d like to set up a photography business, you can create a business page on Facebook. According to DigitalPhotoBuzz.com, this will allow you to have unlimited likes and connections, to share albums, and to tag clients. By following these basic tips you’ll create strong, visually appealing shots – and you’ll be able to share them with a wider audience.

Capturing nature and structures in their natural state is what makes landscape photography the ideal career. A landscape photographer has plenty of opportunities to grow, both in business and a creative sense. You also don’t need to worry about general photography issues like background, pose or color combinations.

Nature has done everything for you. All you need is to do is pick the right spot or angle and take a photograph that will inspire your audience. Here are tips to help you move further in your career.

More Depth Of Field

Since landscape photography deals with a large amount of space – mostly infinite, it is important that you maximize your depth of field and ensure that more of your scene is in focus.

How do you achieve this? Use a smaller aperture setting and increase your shutter speed to compensate for less light.

Timing

The most important thing in landscape photography is the amount of light available during the shoot. This is why you need to select the right time of the day to take your landscape photo. Most photographers love to work either at dawn or within the period when the sun is about to set. However, there are plenty of other times you can take your photo for a pleasing result.

Get A Tripod

Having a steady camera to get the right shot is as important as having great photography skills. In no circumstances should you ever forget to carry along your tripod whenever you want to go taking pictures. Always have a steady camera before taking any shots.

If you find yourself in a place where you can’t stand a tripod, place the camera on anything that will provide support and stability e.g. a car roof.

Know The Location

Before taking any photographs it’s important that you have a good idea of your location. Check the art gallery, use search engines to view pictures of the location including the climatic condition and the terrain. A good knowledge of your location will help you make the right decision and make plans about where and how to go about taking your photograph.

If you live in the city and you don’t want to travel to the country or mountainous areas there are many locations in parks, windmills, water mills, bridges and lighthouses to help you take a perfect picture.

Be Safety Conscious

If you’re traveling to a far away location in your city or county for landscape photography it’s always useful to tell someone about your intention, including when you’ll be back in case of an emergency. You should carry with you some food, back bag for equipment and water. Wear suitable clothing that can deal with the climate in your location and make use of weather reports to better understand your location.

Find Your Focal Point

No photograph can create any effect without a focal point. If you don’t want your viewers to wander around looking for where to rest their focus when viewing your picture, then you must get a focal point.

This can be anything from a rock formation to animals and from a structure or building to a tree. The focal point will also help tell the story of your picture.

In photography, exposure reflect to the amount of light that fall into your camera sensor. If sensor is exposed for too long, your photograph output will be overexposed and the picture details will be washed out with white. In the opposite, your photograph will be underexposed or appeared to be too dark if the sensor is exposed for too short. Getting the right exposure is the most vital element in photography.

There are two main key settings to control your camera exposure which are:

Aperture

Shutter speed

In this post, we will present to you a simple yet useful guide on how to master your camera aperture by understanding the uses of aperture in depth of field, image sharpness and the f-numbers. After reading this post, we hope that you will get to learn and apply the correct aperture setting practically. Have a pleasure reading!

Getting the right exposure

Original image by Alessandro Reginato

We have explained previously that the aperture is one of two key setting to get the correct exposure. An overexposed shot is too dark and underexposed shot is too bright. You can control the exposure by using both aperture and shutter speed. Start with Auto mode and get the reading from your camera. You may also try Aperture priority mode where you can set the aperture manually and get the camera to calculate shutter speed automatically.

It is a best practice to learn how your camera works and start playing with manual mode after you have practically understand how aperture and shutter speed works.

Depth of Field

The depth of field or also known as depth of focus plays as an unique and creative touch in photography. A smaller aperture (bigger f number, Eg: f/16) will get everything in the frame to be in focus and sharp while wider aperture (smaller f number, Eg: f/2.8) can get your subject to be in focus while others is out of focus or blurred.

For example in family portrait, you might want to consider using smaller aperture in order to get everyone faces to be in focus and sharp.

Image Sharpness

Original image by Astrid Van Mele

Generally, the widest aperture will decrease image sharpness. When shot are taken with maximum aperture (smallest f number), the whole area of lens surface was fully optimized and will create a bit of imperfection toward to the center of the glasses. If image sharpness is your main concern of your shot purposes, avoid using the maximum aperture. Stopping down 1-2 f-stops might offer you a little bit of help.

F Numbers

Original image by David Chu

The F numbers or f-stops was referred to the actual size of the aperture. The smaller F numbers means wider aperture opens and more light will enter your lens while a bigger F number means smaller aperture open and the lesser light will enter the lens.

Conclusion

You can get the right exposure by controlling both aperture and shutter speeds.

Start learning and understanding your camera by using Auto mode and aperture priority mode. After you get the idea how the exposure works, start playing and experimenting with manual mode.

Aperture effect depth of field and image sharpness. The smaller f number means the wider aperture opens and bigger f numbers means the smaller aperture open.

The f number was also referred as f-stops.

If you’ve worked with traditional photographic film rather than digital media, you will know how much effort film companies put into making the noise and grain almost invisible. Even fast emulsions now boast fine grain characteristics. It might seem odd, then, to introduce grain deliberately in order to add impact. But grain or rather the grittiness imparts is useful for adding character and mood.

Grain works well on hard subjects: cityscapes, industrial scenes, rugged landscapes and portraits of men. It can conversely even be used with care to give certain shots a romantic feel. Noise and grain works best when it does not have to compete with vibrant colors; images with subdued color even mon0chrome are best.

Adding grain can sometimes add anomalous colors. Sometimes this can add to the pictorial value of the image, but at other times you may wish to suppress it. Use the Monochromatic button in the appropriate dialogue box (if available) to add monochromatic noise to a color image.

The JPEG compression technique introduces unsightly rectangular that become pronounced when the image is enlarged. Adding a little grain to the subject is a way of camouflaging this.

When you list down all the types of photography, that can ever exist, you would end up with millions and the list is supposed to go on till people think creatively. Product photography is one of the most common photographic fields wherein the profession demands lot of dedication and sincerity from the photographer. Product photography required several crucial skills and tips to produce a high quality result. This article throws some light on the product photography tips as discussed below.

1. Attention to detail

One must have the attachment to the object considered for detail study. It is actually the relation between the observer and the object that actually comes out as the picture. The strength of the elements that are in relation with the photographer and the product powers up the quality and expression in the picture.

2. Exposure adjustments

Never compensate the exposure and try to take the picture with the natural setting so that the object is not cloned or made artificial. Use filters and shadows reducers only if its really required as the external elements add more color and life to the product being photographed.

Capture the best feature

Examine the product thoroughly without neglecting even a single detail of the product. Jot down the brighter and darker sides of the product as soon as possible so that the picture contains the right proportion of both

These three tips was very crucial to ensure that you will get the right result for product photography. Hope it helps!
