5 Steps to Happiness in Your Old Age
You have more than likely heard the quotes, “Age is just a number” or “Age is a state of mind”. While we all know that aging is a very real process, what you do with it is entirely up to you. Getting older you are faced with developing health issues and physical challenges but your mind is still your own.
Maintaining a positive and happy outlook is possible regardless of your number, but it doesn’t come without purposeful effort and intrinsic motivation. This chapter in your life should be one of your best, no longer tied to the job or day to day responsibilities of youth. Use this time to focus on yourself, doing things that make you joyful and hopeful for tomorrow.
Follow these five steps to happiness in your old age, and make every moment one to live for.
1. Live a Healthy Lifestyle
Eating healthy and avoiding bad habits can drastically impact your overall physical and emotional well-being. Stay away from processed and fatty foods, excess alcohol, and smoking. A healthy lifestyle will keep your mind sharp and help you live longer.
Investing in yourself will boost your energy and self-confidence, as well as fight off disease. A happy inside is the first step to a happy outside.
There have been hundreds of studies done on the positive effect of socialisation in seniors. One of the biggest issues that people deal with in old age is loneliness and isolation. This comes from a variety of factors, such as the inevitable loss of loved ones and decreased mobility.
Studies show that socially active seniors are 1.5 times more likely to avoid disabilities that affect their mobility and strength such as cooking and using the telephone. They are also less likely to become depressed or isolate themselves.

3. Stay Active
Exercise does wonderful things for us, regardless of age. Whether that is walking down to your neighbours for coffee or taking an aerobic class at your gym.
Obviously, if you are getting out there and doing something while staying healthy, you will feel all the happier because of it.
4. Keep Motivated
Motivation is a powerful tool. Use it effectively and you can live a very fulfilling life. Motivate yourself to do something new, or attempt something challenging every single day. Life has no purpose if you have nothing to reach for, and no goals left to achieve. Now is the time to learn Mandarin, cook tapas, or study ancient Greek philosophy.
We are never to old to learn and advance our minds. By keeping motivated you will have a purpose each day, and will feel fulfilled and happy with your accomplishments.
5. Help Others
If you have free time available, consider giving back to your local community. Volunteer at the library, youth centre, or any organisation that ignites your passion for others such as providing stairlift advice to those with mobility issues in your area.
Making a difference in the life of another person can increase your life satisfaction and make you feel better about yourself in the process. Happiness is contagious, so why not go catch some of your own positive doing.
