1. Be Honest About Yourself And Your Past

Online daters want to portray themselves in the best light possible, and to do so, many users resort to deception. There’s the little white lies like adding a couple inches to your height, saying you’re athletic when you’re not, or even adding a zero (or two) to your income. Then, there’s the more serious lies like saying you’ve never been married or arrested when, in fact, you have.

Seriously, this stuff is public record, and all someone would have to do is look you up on a site like Instant Checkmate and boom, all your lies would be exposed. Obviously you don’t have to disclose this information right away, but sooner or later it’s going to come up, so it’s better to just be honest about your past rather than trying to cover it up with lies.

2. Be Clear About What You’re Looking For

When you create your online dating profile, only half of it is actually about you. You’ll be asked to describe yourself, which includes age and physical appearance, as well as your interests, passions, hobbies, etc. In the second half of the process, you’ll provide the same info based on the qualities you’re looking for in a partner.

The key here is to be crystal clear about the type of person you want to date because doing so will help you connect with more viable prospects. If kids are a deal breaker, say it. If you’ll only date someone who falls into a certain age range, say it. When you omit pertinent details like these, people you’d never date will end up trying to connect with you, which is ultimately of waste of their time. The more information you provide, the more compatible your matches will be.

3. Be Polite When Rejecting Others

No one likes a rude, self-righteous online dater, so you should remember to be kind if you’re faced with the task of rejecting another user. Think about it; online dating sites are home to millions of singles looking for love, so you’re bound to get a few messages from people who just don’t fit the bill. Even if the person is outrageous and 100% not your type, you should still reply in a courteous manner.

None of that “In your dreams!” BS, because a response like that accomplishes nothing. All it does is make the other person feel horrible, not to mention the fact that it makes you look like an major a@#hole. So, regardless of who’s on the other end of the conversation, just politely let them know that you’re not interested. Also remember that at some point, you’ll likely be rejected by someone else, so imagine yourself in that situation and just be nice about it—simple as that!
