5 Reasons To Become A Web Freelancer

# Tips

Being a freelancer in the web industry is awesome! It offers the perfect combination of earning power and lifestyle. There are many reasons why I became a freelance consultant here are just a few of them.

1. Entrepreneurial Streak

From an early age I wanted to follow in my fathers footsteps and start my own business, although he worked in a different industry all together the bug was there for me from an early age. Some people are not content with working for somebody else, and being their own boss is the only way they can truly be happy in their work. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t just jump in at the deep end and become a freelancer straight away. I worked my way up through the ranks at various web companies, managing departments and working up to senior management level.

I have now been working in the web industry for the last 15 years, I am the managing director of a small web design and search engine marketing agency called The Web Design Group. I have finally realised a personal dream of mine.

On to my next reason…

2. Lifestyle Choice

Another powerful reason people decide to become freelancers is the lifestyle it brings, whether you are a sole trader or own a small agency the lifestyle can totally different from the of an employee. As a freelancer you are totally free to decide when and where you work, if you want to start work at 10am everyday and finish at 3pm then the choice is yours! The freelance lifestyle can be extremely flexible, you can even pick and choose the type of projects you work on and for who!

3. Master Of Your Own Fate

One reason I love freelancing is that you are in control of your own destiny, you will only succeed if you put the effort in. You have nobody else to rely upon other than yourself. The more you put into freelancing the more you will get out, and the more money you will make.

4. It’s A Challenge

It isn’t easy to go down the route of becoming a freelancer, there are many pitfalls and challenges to overcome. Some of these challenges could be finding the work, building a reputation for yourself, meeting deadlines, growing your business and finally improving your skills. Whatever the challenges, if you can overcome them, the entrepreneur in you will feel a sense of pride and achievement.

5. Earning Power

There is a higher potential to earn more money then if you were an employee! Usually you your be subject to yearly (if you are lucky) pay rises, to a certain level until you reach a maximum which your employer is willing to pay. When you are a freelancer you are free to take as much money out of the business as you wish, the more effort you put in to finding new clients and contracts the more money you will potentially earn. Always remember to pay the tax man though.

These are just a few of my favourite reasons for becoming a freelancer working in the web industry, please feel free to add to this list in the comments section below.
